When taking a child into special education it is mandatory to include support, information, guidance and counselling (where appropriate) to the child's parents.
The parents of the children we take care of at our centre in Peristeri, no one except one, are thoroughly informed about the goals we set and especially about the ways in which we achieve them.
For some parents, however, this is not enough and they need to attend regular sessions with psychologists in order to be further guided in relation to their parenting of the child. It could be said that these meetings help the parent-child relationship so much that often the goals of the other therapists are conquered more quickly.
The procedure lasts 45 minutes, involves most parents, regardless of the extent of the child's difficulties, therapeutic confidentiality is maintained and often the parents themselves seek the next visit. It is completed at a time that they agree to.
We focus a lot of our attention on the needs that arise from the whole therapeutic process, whether it concerns the children or their parents. Because as we all know, happy children are those who have happy parents.
Our Psychologists
The psychologists of our centre very often organise parent counselling sessions in their premises and attend to the needs that arise each time. Usually it is good that both parents attend the process otherwise sometimes we settle for one when no other way is possible. In all cases, the psychologists, while maintaining therapeutic confidentiality, take care to be neutral and professional, i.e. to maintain the well-meaning and warm attitude that is required without judging or being biased in favour of one parent over the other. They give their advice or direction based on the listening and the request they have to manage at any given time.
Our Space in Peristeri
Parent counselling is conducted in the same rooms as the individual behavioural therapies. These are the psychotherapy rooms which can accommodate both children and parents at the same time. In fact, they are arranged in such a way that the equipment can accommodate all solar groups. The warm atmosphere facilitates the objective which is the exchange between the specialist and the other visitors and, above all, the building of trust.
