What is Paediatric Physiotherapy & What it offers

Physiotherapy for children is the specialized physiotherapy intervention applied to infants and children in order to improve their motor patterns, prevent any complications and achieve functional independence.

The intervention concerns children with neuromuscular or neurodevelopmental disorders such as cerebral palsy, myopathies, syndromes, as well as conditions with respiratory problems, arthritis, head injuries, scoliosis and diseases of the peripheral nervous system.

Each child is treated individually, understanding their problems and developing a tailored program based on their needs and goals. This is achieved through regular assessment and careful monitoring of the progression of the child's clinical picture.

The Role of Physiotherapy and its benefits

The intervention aims to improve motor deficits and functional limitations that prevent and delay normal motor development and activity.

The main therapeutic method used is Bobath-NDT (Neurodevelopmental Treatment). With the Bobath method, the physiotherapist uses manipulation and facilitation techniques to prepare, train and ultimately induce in the infant or child a normal motor pattern.

Establishing motor patterns ultimately helps the child to develop age-appropriate functional skills. Also, the Bobath method uses all the positions an infant goes through while utilizing a plethora of aids such as balls, rollers, wedges, multi-gyms, suspended equipment, stanchions, splints and various toys in order for the child to reach his or her maximum potential. In many cases, the intervention is reinforced in parallel with approaches such as Sensory Integration (SI), so that the child's needs are fully met.

Procedure: how physiotherapy is done in children

Physiotherapy for children is applied depending on the condition and in particular with specialization in the Bobath method -as the predominant method- on an individual level for a duration of 40-60 minutes, depending on the case. This method seeks functionality by facilitating muscle tone through specific positions.

The specialized physiotherapists are certified and experienced in what they offer.

Physiotherapy for Children Prices & Costs

The cost and prices of physiotherapy vary based on the frequency of sessions required on a weekly basis and according to the severity of the disorder. They are usually performed 1 to 3 times per week and often the therapeutic intervention is combined with other specific therapies such as occupational therapy, special education or speech therapy.

Prices for physiotherapy for children range from 30 to 45 euros per session. The EOPYY reimburses between 10 and 12 sessions for each coded disorder.

Physical therapies for children with difficulties are currently paid by the EOPYY at 150 euros (10 PT per month for movement disorders such as “congenital hypertonia, congenital hypotonia, cerebral palsy with spastic quadriplegia, spastic diplegia, spastic hemiplegia, trisomy 21). However, these opinions also contain other types of treatment in case the child needs a combined programme.
