Child psychotherapy or more correctly “psychotherapy for children” is a method of intervention in psychology that is normally carried out by licensed psychologists with a university degree and specifically by those who have attended a training course complementary to their studies in psychology.
Unfortunately, there is no legislative coverage of the subject of psychotherapy, but for ethical reasons it is more appropriate for these specialists to intervene. It is carried out through games, plasticine and drawing for younger children and through dialogue and senior games for older children. At the same time, projective tools such as “Duss's myths” , “sentence completion, role-playing games, etc.”, sensory games, music and fairy tales are used.
Essentially, psychotherapy is the most widespread method of intervention for both children and adults that assists in the recovery of a person who is suffering or dysfunctional in their daily life.
The role of the psychologist is first to listen to the parent who has a concern about their child's behaviour, then to discern from the information gathered whether the concern is reasonable and finally to ask if the child needs to be seen to get a more complete picture of the situation.
After seeing the child in person, he or she formulates a therapeutic plan based on the child's needs and the way in which he or she will be able to get closer to him or her in order to start building a therapeutic relationship of reciprocity and trust.
As the sessions progress, the psychologist meets with the parents again to verify the achievement of the goals and to give new instructions.
Organic disorders:
Mental disorders:
These are usually children who have behavioural, socialisation and adjustment difficulties at school, at home or both.
With the help of the parents or other family members, the psychologist identifies the cause of the difficulty, records the symptoms that appear and works in a counselling or psychotherapeutic way in order to relieve, minimise or, as far as possible, restore the symptoms that burden the child.
The guidance and counselling of parents aims to recognise, understand and ultimately accept these difficulties, in order to achieve as quickly as possible an improvement in the functioning of the family system and, by extension, the child's mental state.
It is universally known that psychotherapy is widespread for its clear framework, which is defined by a specific duration, usually 45 minutes, a fixed weekly appointment and the space each therapist needs to work.
Most therapists use a desk for the safest distance between therapist and client, while others leave a space between the two positions where they can keep a couch or armchair. In this environment, therapeutic confidentiality is maintained. Psychotherapy is known for the significant improvement it offers to many people.
For children, it is essential to have a warm area, usually with a small rug and plenty of toys for the best choice according to age.
Through dialogue, drawing, painting, play, fairy tales, puppetry, music, psychotherapy offers children the opportunity to express all their thoughts and feelings, which the therapist processes and provides the solutions they need.
EOPY reimburses based on the disorder codes from the global health classification icd10 from 60 euro per month for cerebral palsy , 90 euro per month for stuttering, 120 euro per month for ADHD, atypical autism, generalised anxiety disorder and mild depressive episode.
You can find out the cost of each session by contacting us by phone or in person at our office.
In Peristeri, the Special Children's Centre of Westiki opens its doors to a specialised Psychotherapy Centre for Children. This space is dedicated to providing support and therapeutic care to children who are experiencing emotional, social or behavioural challenges.
With a warm and welcoming environment, the centre offers a safe space where children can express their feelings, learn to manage their challenges and become empowered through therapy. The centre's team of experienced psychotherapists work empathetically and professionally, providing tailored therapies for each little hero.
