The learning disability assessment is carried out in a series of meetings during which the specialist takes a history of the child, records the difficulties reported by parents and teachers in relation to the child's learning performance, observes school notebooks and assesses the child in reading, writing, spelling, writing and arithmetic.
If errors are found in the written word or in reading, such as strong misspellings, omissions, substitutions, additions or transpositions of letters, but also by examining the flow of reading, the administration of the psychometric test of the American-Romanian psychologist David Wechsler, WISC (Wechsler intelligence scale of children), from which it takes its name, is recommended. It is in its 5th edition and is divided into five domains that examine a child's intelligence as a whole.
If the results are homogeneous and within the average of Greek children of the same age (as it is weighted in our country), then the specialist can make a diagnosis of specific learning difficulties (such as dyslexia). If not, i.e. if the results are below the specific average, then the difficulties are considered to be of a general type and relate to general learning difficulties. In many cases, for a more complete picture, a child psychiatric examination, to take into account other factors that may affect the learning pathway.
The Special Educator has two roles. The first has to do with Evaluation and therefore the identification of indications of learning difficulties and the second by referring the child, if necessary, to the specialist psychologist who is competent to administer the WISC psychometric test mentioned above.
When the process is completed, the special educator can intervene with sessions of a special learning programme to improve learning difficulties and enrich the child's knowledge.
Essentially, the following disorders are not treated but diagnosed with the test?;
In essence, this tool, the WISC, enables us to determine in which areas a child is capable and in which areas he/she is less capable in order to give a direction to improve the skills deficits and at the same time to explain and suggest to the child and his/her parents the orientations that best suit him/her for the future.
The assessment also offers secondary school children the opportunity to be tested orally or to have extra time in their exams. The CEDAS is the competent body of the Ministry of Education that certifies such facilities for public schools. This assessment also offers the determination of therapeutic intervention. Finally, parents better understand the child's potential and adjust their expectations according to the results.
The learning disabilities assessment test is usually administered in two or three sessions. After the child's notebooks, dictated writing, reading and arithmetic have been checked, we then move on to administering the intelligence test (WISC 5), which produces 5 primary indicators in addition to the General Intelligence Index (GII):
This test is administered exclusively by certified psychologists and aims to diagnose learning difficulties since it tests the child's ability in all these areas and gives results compared to children of the same age in Greece.
Once the results are scored, a general index of cognitive ability is determined which is responsible for indicating whether or not specific learning difficulties are present.
The cost is free of charge at the public centres of the Ministry of Education KEDASY (Centre for Interdisciplinary Assessment of Counselling and Support). In private centres for special therapies it is charged at discretion. At the end of the assessment, each centre is obliged to give parents a written report with the results and their interpretation.
In Peristeri, the Special Children's Center of Westiki offers a comprehensive Assessment Test for the identification of learning difficulties in children. This test is designed to identify any learning challenges, such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia, providing a detailed profile of each student's individual strengths and needs.
The assessment process involves a series of standardised tests and clinical observations, conducted by qualified teachers and psychologists. In this way, the centre provides parents and teachers with valuable information on how best to support and educate the child, enhancing their academic achievement and confidence.
