What is parent counselling and what are its benefits

What is parent counselling

Parent Counselling is one of the most important interventions in the field of special education. It is carried out only by qualified psychologists, with compulsory attendance of both parents at the meeting. Although it usually takes place 1 to 2 times a month, its results are decisive for the child's progress.

It aims to understand the difficulties, interpret the behaviours and accept them. Through this process, the parents describe the difficulties of interaction with the child or the relationship between them and then the specialist, with his or her special hearing and knowledge, raises a series of concerns that the parents have not usually been able to discern on their own.

This creates a better bridge of communication that is missing in the various subsystems of the family between parent-child, mother-child, father-child or mother-father. In this process, it is often necessary to analyse the grandparents' relations with the child or parents in order to take into account the whole family system which may be directly involved and which may have been disrupted or distanced.

The role of the Psychologist

The expert's advice is of course not a magic recipe but a gradual preparation and change of entrenched and rigid relationships that are blocked and need feedback to be modified.

His role is not to judge or criticise the parents but to sympathise with them and to be able to interpret the behaviours that he discerns on the one hand and to give directions for their modifications on the other, which is directly linked to the process of psychotherapy.

What difficulties are addressed with parent counselling

Procedure: How Parent Counseling is done

Parent Counseling is conducted by the mental health specialist through extensive listening to the family's problems. Calmly and with the required warmth, the psychologist listens in detail to what the parents have to say and by penetrating into their concerns or anxieties regarding the child, provides important solutions for the better functioning of the family system.
