What is Child Assessment and Diagnosis and what it offers

What is Child Assessment and Diagnosis

The registration of a request is usually followed by an assessment of the child, in the presence of the parents, in order to identify, justify and clarify the possible difficulties and deficits in the various developmental areas (communication, speech, mobility, learning performance, behaviour, perception, etc.). This first meeting is considered particularly important, since it usually determines the necessity or not of a therapeutic intervention. Often, more meetings follow in order to further assess the child's overall picture.

The role of the expert in the evaluation

The observation of the child's clinical picture, the completion of questionnaires by the parents, the use of therapeutic and educational material and the administration of weighted evaluative tests and tools make it easier for the therapist to provide the required answers to the parents' questions and concerns.

In many cases it is necessary for the specialist to contact the school environment or the doctor who is monitoring the child by telephone in order to get a more complete picture.

Finally from the child psychiatric examination or the psychological assessment of the clinical psychologist, the parents are given a diagnosis of the child, i.e. a report of the disorder to which the specific difficulties fall and to which hospital category they belong.

Which disorders are treated with Child Assessment and Diagnosis?;

Through the assessment, the child's difficulties and the areas that are affected are first identified. These difficulties are then given a name through a child psychiatric examination by a specialist doctor.

It is the child psychiatrist who will diagnose and validate the disorder through the World Health Organization's classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders, ICD-10. It mainly concerns all neurodevelopmental and mental disorders (communication, autistic spectrum, speech, literacy, behavioural, speech, learning, concentration and mobility, anxiety, bulimia-anorexia, childhood depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality structure, etc.).

What are the benefits of Child Assessment and Diagnosis?;

The EVALUATION is considered of utmost importance because it presides over the child psychiatric examination that will lead, as we have mentioned, to the DIAGNOSIS.

When the assessment is comprehensive and integrated then the steps to be followed are clear and structured, based on the difficulties, personality, social context of each child, the request of the parents and the child himself.

It is the diagnosis that will determine the treatment protocol and the hierarchy of goals to be achieved in order to overcome the symptoms of the disorder.

Procedure: Child Assessment & Diagnosis

The paediatric assessment and diagnosis is initially carried out in an appointment which usually lasts 1 hour. Sometimes longer appointments may be needed to clarify the child's difficulties. At this first appointment, a complete developmental and medical history is taken and then the parents observe the therapist or physician in their interaction with the child.

There are times when parents may be asked to interact with their child in order to note differences in his/her image and communication mood with them. This way helps the parents to directly perceive the developmental milestones that must have been mastered according to the age of the child. Finally, once the process is completed, the therapist or doctor discusses with the parents, explaining and analysing what has been observed in the child.
