The child may have difficulty finding the right words, forming sentences, understanding instructions or expressing themselves emotionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em data-start=\"554\" data-end=\"570\">According to the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>, <em data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"742\">communication disorders are neurodevelopmental difficulties that affect the child's functioning in everyday life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can result in difficulties in socialisation as well. These difficulties may be transient or permanent and may be mild or more severe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Main types of Communication Disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech and language disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logos consists of two main axes, understanding (internal discourse) and expression (external discourse). A speech disorder combines difficulties in understanding and\/or using language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The child may be delayed in developing vocabulary, sentence structure or the correct use of grammatical rules. He or she often has difficulty expressing thoughts and feelings clearly, which affects both his or her academic performance and social interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/diatarachi-arthrosis-aities-diagnwsi-therapeia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthrosis Disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2009<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulties in pronunciation or clarity of speech. The child may substitute or omit phonemes (phonemes, e.g. \u201cR\u201d) or have difficulty forming specific sounds correctly. These difficulties may affect the child's understanding of his\/her environment and create insecurity in communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pragmatic (social) Communication Disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in understanding and using the social rules of language (e.g., use of singular to unfamiliar people, not understanding extra-verbal communication, indiscriminate sociability, not following the rules of dialogue, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The child may have difficulty starting or maintaining a conversation, understanding humour or innuendo, or adapting his or her speech to the person or environment. These types of difficulties affect the child's social relationships and participation in groups or school activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixed Speech and Understanding Disorder (Dysphasia)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It affects both the ability to express and understand spoken language. The child has difficulty forming sentences, understanding complex instructions or following conversations. This is a more complex form of disorder, requiring specialised speech and language therapy intervention and systematic support to develop effective communication skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dysphasia is often associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/eidiki-glwssiki-diatarachi-sli-symptwmata-therapeia\/\">Specific Language Impairment (SLI)<\/a>, a neurodevelopmental disability that affects the understanding and expression of speech.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism spectrum disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It affects both the ability to express and understand and the ability to socialise. The child finds it difficult to interact and communicate with the interlocutor, is limited to his or her own interests and becomes isolated in both the family and school environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1593\">\u0397<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/aytismos-symptomata-aities-therapeia\/\">autism spectrum disorder<\/a> <em data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1711\">is often accompanied by difficulties in communication and social interaction.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the symptoms?;<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4392\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"longdesc-return-4392\" class=\"wp-image-4392 size-full\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/symptomata-diatarachis-epikoinwnias.jpg\" alt=\"Child and speech therapist communicate with signs, sitting on a couch.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr?longdesc=4392&amp;referrer=4389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/symptomata-diatarachis-epikoinwnias.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/symptomata-diatarachis-epikoinwnias-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/symptomata-diatarachis-epikoinwnias-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Communication training with alternative methods for children with speech disorders.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every child is unique, but some common signs that may indicate a communication disorder are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed speech development or limited vocabulary<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in understanding and carrying out instructions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeated or incomplete phrases or sounds <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of eye contact or social interaction or communication with others\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty describing events or feelings or retelling events <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritation when trying to communicate <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeated errors of syntax or articulation or organisation of speech\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you recognise any of these signs, it is important to ask <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/axiologisi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a speech and language therapist or developmental therapist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"792\">In some cases, you may also need to<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/paidopsyxiatriki-eksetasi\/\">child psychiatric evaluation<\/a>, <em data-start=\"825\" data-end=\"883\">in order to exclude or diagnose accompanying difficulties.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1164\">As the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/speech\/disorders\/\">American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)<\/a>, <em data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1348\">early intervention by a qualified speech and language therapist can significantly improve the child's communication skills.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes and Factors<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech and language disorders are not always accompanied by clear causes. However, some factors that seem to be associated with their occurrence are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurodevelopmental disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hereditary or genetic factors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech delay or hearing loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental effects or lack of verbal stimuli<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2413\">especially in the<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/prowra-mwra-anaptyxi-frontida-epiviwsi\/\">premature babies<\/a>, <em data-start=\"2431\" data-end=\"2534\">speech and communication difficulties may occur more frequently and require close monitoring.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of early diagnosis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.didaktorika.gr\/eadd\/handle\/10442\/59029\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the difficulty is identified, the more effective the intervention is. \u0397 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/prwimh-paremvasi\/\"><b>early speech and language therapy support<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can greatly enhance communication skills and help the child to develop confidence in their daily interactions with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment and Therapeutic Support<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our Center, we apply individualized programs that combine:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/logotherapeia\/\"><b>Speech therapy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to enhance speech, comprehension and expression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/ergotherapeia\/\"><b>Occupational therapy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to develop communication and interaction skills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/symvouleftiki-goneon\/\"><b>Parental counselling<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so that the family is actively involved in the therapeutic process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2071\">In some children, approaches such as<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/entatiki-allilepidrasi-ti-einai-kai-pos-voitha\/\">Intensive Interaction<\/a>, <em data-start=\"2100\" data-end=\"2169\">which enhances communication through relationship and play.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our multidisciplinary team works closely with each child and their parents, creating a supportive and safe learning environment.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":4390,"template":"","tags":[131],"class_list":{"0":"post-4389","1":"arthra","2":"type-arthra","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"tag-diataraches-logou-omilias"},"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/arthra\/4389","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/arthra"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/arthra"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/4390"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4389"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4389"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
