They may, for example, say \u201ctala\u201d instead of \u201cladder\u201d or \u201cpelo\u201d instead of \u201chat\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn't mean there is a problem with their intelligence - it just means they need <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the way they use their mouth, tongue and lips to make sounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), this disorder is classified as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.galinos.gr\/web\/drugs\/main\/icdcodes\/F80.0\"><b><i>F80.0 - Specific joint disorder<\/i><\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The child uses phonemes at a lower level than that of his\/her cognitive age, while his\/her language skills are at a normal level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is, the child uses correct syntax, has an age-appropriate vocabulary but <\/span><b>does not speak \u201cclearly\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, other forms include the <\/span><b>dysarthria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is associated with neurological disorders and <\/span><b>verbal dyspraxia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, due to difficulties in the coordination of the muscles of the mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another related disorder is the <\/span><b>phonological disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which differs from the joint disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the child (or person) does not use the sounds of language correctly, not because he or she cannot pronounce them, but because he or she does not know how to put them in the right place in words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This disorder can make it difficult for others to understand speech and can affect speech comprehension in general. <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/diatarachi-epikoinonias-se-paidia-katanoisi-antimetwpisi-therapeytiki-ypostirixi\/\">communication of the child<\/a>, and often requires specialised speech and language therapy intervention.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes and Risk Factors\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>joint disorders and phonological disorders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be caused by a number of factors. Most often they are due to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development factors<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as speech delay or speech impediment, or <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/eidiki-glwssiki-diatarachi-sli-symptwmata-therapeia\/\">specific language disorder<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child who has a speech delay is likely to have a delay in acquiring correct phonemic articulation, in line with expected developmental milestones. However, this is not an absolute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b><i>neurological factors<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be another cause. For example, cerebral palsy can affect the child's ability to use the sounds of language correctly and cause dysarthria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children with<\/span> <b><i>anatomical or organic issues<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have concomitant joint disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, prognathism or poor convergence of the teeth can affect the production of the sibilant sounds, i.e. \u201cs\u201c or \"z\".\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many times, the joint is also affected by external factors. Prolonged use of a bottle or pacifier or thumb dislocation can significantly affect the anatomy of the mouth, resulting in incorrect articulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cleft palate or cleft lip can affect a group of sounds - phonemes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, partial deafness can also affect the correct placement of sounds. It is typical that children who suffer from frequent ear infections, during the age of acquiring a sound, end up distorting it, because essentially when they had to learn it they were not hearing it correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b><i>genetic factors<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also affect correct articulation, as some children who have difficulties with articulation usually have parents who also had similar difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Forms of Joint Disorders\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4119\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"longdesc-return-4119\" class=\"wp-image-4119 size-full\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sychnes-morfes-diatarachis-arthrosis.jpg\" alt=\"Boy with a sad expression, possibly experiencing difficulty in speech or articulation.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr?longdesc=4119&amp;referrer=4115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sychnes-morfes-diatarachis-arthrosis.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sychnes-morfes-diatarachis-arthrosis-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sychnes-morfes-diatarachis-arthrosis-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Articulation disorders affect speech clarity and can affect children's self-confidence.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned above, many children have difficulty producing certain sounds correctly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common phonemes that are altered are <\/span><b>syringes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g.s,z and their clusters i.e. \u201cf, p\u03c3, \u03c0\u03c3, \u03ba\u03c3, \u03c4\u03b6 etc.), the <\/span><b>dental<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g. d, i and their clusters, i.e. \u201cdr, \u03b8r, \u03c7\u03b8, \u03c1\u03b8 etc.) and the <\/span><b>lipodontics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g. \u03c6, \u03b2 and their clusters, i.e. \u201c\u03a6\u03c1, \u03c6\u03c4, \u03b2\u03c1, \u03b2\u03b3\u201d etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this does not mean that these are the only sounds that can be altered.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articulation disorder in \u201cs\u201d and other phonemes:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common articulation disorder involving the \u201cs\u201d sound is called <\/span><b>sigmatism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are different types of sigmatism, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mid-tooth sigmatism: air passes between the teeth, resulting in the \u201cs\u201d sounding distorted. What some parents typically say is that the child \u201cwhistles it\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lateral sigmatism<\/span><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Air escapes from the sides of the tongue instead of the centre, resulting in a distorted, wet \u201cs\u201d (like a child holding saliva in the mouth) or \u201ch\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transdental Sigmatism<\/span><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tongue is placed between the teeth and sounds like an \u201ci\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal sigmatism: air escapes from the nose and the sound sounds like a soft \u201csnoring\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articulation disorder in other phonemes:<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another common difficulty is the production of the \u201cr\u201d, the so-called <\/span><b>\u201crotacism\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phoneme<\/span><b> \u201c\u03c1\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is characterized by the intense vibration of the tongue and the accompanying airflow and requires delicate and well-coordinated muscle manipulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often there is a complete substitution of the sound with another sound, e.g. \u201cluda instead of rose\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are children who have mastered the correct placement but without the vibration during the production of the phoneme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This results in the production of \u2018r\u2019 in a more \u201cFrench\u201d way, i.e. it sounds more like a \u201cc\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint disorder in adults\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The joint disorder <\/span><b>in adults<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs either as a continuation of a developmental difficulty from childhood, or because of trauma or neurological disease, such as stroke or Parkinson's.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can affect the clarity of speech, making communication more difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This difficulty is usually related to correct tongue positioning, muscle strength and breath control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of <\/span><b>speech therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adults can enhance their speech and significantly improve their everyday communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each correct <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/diagnosi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evaluation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starts with a complete medical and developmental history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases we need to ask the child himself for some information that the parents may not be able to give us, e.g. whether he understands his difficulty, how he feels, whether he has been made fun of, whether he needs to think of other words when others do not understand, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the history has been taken, we move on to procedures to evaluate the child himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, one <\/span><b>joint test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is important to mention that each speech and language therapist can use their own test, the results of which, although indicative, are not official.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only official test for the evaluation of the phonological system of Greek-speaking children that has been adapted and weighted to Greek data is the <\/span><b>\u201cTest of Phonetics and Phonological Development\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/logopedists.gr\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panhellenic Association of Speech and Language Therapists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1995).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then it is carried out <\/span><b>\u03b7<\/b> <b>orofacial examination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is designed to detect functional or structural difficulties in articulators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test evaluates the strength, accuracy and range of motion of the articulated organs, such as the tongue, lips, palate and lower jaw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process involves simple commands or activities in which the child is asked to perform specific movements. <\/span><b>The speech therapist <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">observes the speed, symmetry and coordination of movements in order to identify any malfunctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, breathing, nasal expiration, phonation function and even swallowing are evaluated, as all of these are closely related to speech production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results of the orofacial examination, in combination with the <\/span><b>speech evaluation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provide the speech and language therapist with a clear picture of the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the needs of the child and guide the <\/span><b>Design<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the appropriate treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intervention required:\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>When speech is unintelligible to the environment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if at the age of 4-5 years the child's speech is not understood by people outside the family, this is an indication for possible intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When the acquisition of basic phonemes is significantly delayed:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each phoneme has a developmental age limit within which it is expected to be mastered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Panhellenic Association of Speech and Language Pathologists, the ages of vocalization are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>AGE\u00a0<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>VOICE<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><b>2,6 - Then the placement of the target phoneme. Then to practice through words containing it, first in the initial position, then in the middle and then in the final position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it seeks generalisation and automatisation through sentences, short texts and spontaneous dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important role is played by the <\/span><b>parental involvement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at home. Exercises in front of a mirror help the child to observe the movement of the lips and tongue.
