Extra-verbal and verbal communication and socialisation are usually impaired.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These individuals also display stereotypes and limited interests as well as sensory deviations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2013 we now refer to the <\/span><b>autism spectrum disorder <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or autistic spectrum disorder based on the American Psychiatric Association DSM 5 precisely because it is a disorder that encompasses a wide range of potential, functioning and behaviours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with autism can have special abilities\/skills on the one hand and on the other hand have significant difficulties in interacting with people or regulating their behaviour and emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are therefore talking about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autism spectrum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in that there are people with very limited autonomous needs to people with ongoing support needs and extremely significant developmental deficits.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of autism<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4087\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4087\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"longdesc-return-4087\" class=\"wp-image-4087 size-full\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/eidi-autismou.jpg\" alt=\"Colorful hands in a row, symbolizing diversity and types of autism on the spectrum.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr?longdesc=4087&amp;referrer=4083\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/eidi-autismou.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/eidi-autismou-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/eidi-autismou-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/eidi-autismou-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/eidi-autismou-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Autism types differ in terms of severity, characteristics and support needs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people think that there are different types of autism when in fact there are different types of autism. <\/span><b>severities or genetic syndromes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who have some symptoms in common with autism spectrum disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Classification of Diseases or ICD 10 refers to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pervasive developmental disorders (f.84) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and divides the most common disorders as follows:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism of childhood ( f. 84.0)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atypical autism (f.84.1)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rett syndrome (f.84.2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asperger's syndrome (f.84.5)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All autism spectrum disorders share some common features, but the severity of symptoms determines the functioning and prognosis of each individual.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asperger Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, High Functioning<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>asperger syndrome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which we tend to abolish as a disorder and now refer to as high-functioning autism, differs from typical autism in that there is no general delay or slowing in language development but there are deficits in reciprocal social interaction and stereotyped or repetitive interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are usually people with good cognitive abilities but may have difficulty in individual social situations and are often absorbed in their own activities or talents (e.g., construction, painting, robotics, etc.).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand the <\/span><b>Rett syndrome<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows partial or complete loss of acquired hand and speech abilities. It occurs only in girls, stereotyped hand-twisting movements and significant cognitive deficit are also manifested, although social interest seems to be maintained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism <\/span><b>high functionality, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involves people who usually grow up in a fairly typical way, develop relatively normally in the areas of speech, self-care and partial autonomy but may fall short in executive functions ( critical thinking, organisation, planning and processing) or higher functions of communication (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discourse pragmatics or social skills).\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may, for example, lack empathy, humour, understanding of figurative language use, ability to sustain a dialogue or to <\/span><b>theory of mind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, i.e. the ability for others to have beliefs, thoughts or feelings that differ from theirs, which is a prerequisite for quality social interaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild form of autism: What it means and how it is differentiated.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mild form of autism involves people who usually have normal intelligence and can relate in a fairly satisfactory way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In essence, this form of autism is part of the broader autistic phenotype (ASD). These are people who may know the social rules and communication but do not always apply them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They do not always have the flexibility in their thinking or communication, they are more \u201cclosed\u201d people with few social contacts, or on the contrary they are hyper-social without emotional commitment. The most indicative ones are below.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warning The presence of any of the following symptoms in a child does not necessarily indicate the presence of an autistic spectrum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>2-5 years old<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> :<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding eye contact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech delay<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not respond when called by name.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does not point with the index finger at the desired object (usually points with the palm).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ascetic mobility in space<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indifference to children of the same age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anger outbursts when his desire is not immediately satisfied<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited interest in social activities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lonely and monotonous game, devoid of imagination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stereotypical movements (tossing, pendulum movements, repetitive clapping, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Routines\/ Obsessions (game in series, specific program....<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Sensory difficulties: Many children with autism have difficulties in processing stimuli, which is why intervention through <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/aisthitiriaki-oloklirosi-si\/\">sensory integration<\/a> can significantly help to regulate motor and behavioural organisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h4><strong>6+ years old:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in understanding social rules.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in understanding higher verbal functions (perceiving humour, irony, the other person's intention, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need for routines and intense stress if interrupted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor socialisation with children of the same age, isolation or unstable social contacts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialized, limited, intense and monotonous interests (e.g., dinosaurs, mathematics, state flags, subway stops, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above indications may be related to broader <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/diatarachi-epikoinonias-se-paidia-katanoisi-antimetwpisi-therapeytiki-ypostirixi\/\">communication disorders in children<\/a>, which require careful evaluation in order to make a correct differential diagnosis.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walking on the toes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toe walking is a common phenomenon seen in children with autism but is not an exclusive symptom of the autistic spectrum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research has shown that approximately 20-50% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have this habit, compared to just 5% in the general child population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possible reasons for this behaviour can be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensory difficulties: Many children with autism have an increased or decreased sensory register, especially in relation to proprioception (the processing of the sense of body position) and tactile sensitivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some children may not be able to bear to put their whole foot on the ground or others may be regulated by the pressure applied to the toes through toeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty coordinating movements (dyspraxia): <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scirp.org\/reference\/referencespapers?referenceid=3065866\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that many children with autism have weakness in the musculature of the legs, which affects their coordination and leads to unusual walking patterns (Gowen &amp; Hamilton, 2013).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurological factors: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/integrative-neuroscience\/articles\/10.3389\/fnint.2013.00051\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies suggest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the changes in motor development observed in children with autism may be related to <\/span><b>different brain connectivity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and motion control (Whyatt &amp; Craig, 2013).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism in Adults<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4084\" adults<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of autism in adults also vary in relation to the severity and ability to <\/span><b>adaptive skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the person.
