{"id":3927,"date":"2025-02-04T14:25:30","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T11:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/?post_type=arthra&#038;p=3927"},"modified":"2026-06-11T15:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T12:30:37","slug":"depy-symptomata-diagnosi-therapeia-antimetopisi","status":"publish","type":"arthra","link":"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/arthra\/depy-symptomata-diagnosi-therapeia-antimetopisi\/","title":{"rendered":"ADHD: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment &amp; Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>What is ADHD-Y\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms are extensive, dysfunctional and stem from executive dysfunction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is characterised by attention deficit, i.e. the difficulty of the person to focus his\/her attention on an activity continuously and to stay with it in order to complete it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often accompanied by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyperactivity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strong mobility<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impulsivity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rush<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Differences between ADHD and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ADHD includes attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity, attention deficit disorder (ADHD) is a more limited condition in which hyperactivity does not occur. In attention deficit disorder:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main symptoms are related to the person's difficulty mainly to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus his attention<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the corresponding stimulus (e.g. in a dialogue, during an activity, in a sequence of instructions, etc.) and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organisational difficulty <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimuli and information (processing, memory, planning and solving).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not accompanied by hyperactivity or intense impulsive behaviour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention deficit disorder (ADHD) is less obvious, making it harder to detect, unlike ADHD, which has more pronounced and extensive symptoms due to intense mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact causes of ADHD are not entirely clear, however, researchers have identified a number of factors that contribute to its development. The disorder appears to be associated with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Genetic predisposition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : People with a family history of ADHD have an increased chance of developing the disorder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Neurological dysfunctions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Abnormalities in specific areas of the brain, such as those related to attention and impulse control, are considered an important factor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Environmental factors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Exposure to harmful substances such as smoking, alcohol or toxic chemicals, psychological stress and increased maternal blood pressure during pregnancy are factors that increase the risk of ADHD. Especially without a specific occupation, they are characterized by unnecessary and intense mobility in space. They often tease objects, move them, damage them, or make noise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>By age:<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Infancy (2-5 years old):<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>Inexhaustible energy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They run incessantly, they seem to be constantly \u00abon their toes\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Difficulty focusing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They cannot complete games or activities, they need to switch activities frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Irritability:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They cry or get angry easily when their needs are not met, they cannot easily control their impulses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Involuntary (unconscious) movements:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They constantly touch objects, have difficulty following simple instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In these ages the <a href=\"https:\/\/eidikokentropaidiou.gr\/en\/prwimh-paremvasi\/peristeri\/\">Early Intervention<\/a> plays a key role in the child's future development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>School age (6-12):<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>School performance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They find it difficult to answer class questions correctly or do not raise their hand to speak. They often make careless mistakes, forget assignments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Relationships with peers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They show difficulties in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pasypppi.gr\/oi-prwtes-sxeseis-twn-paidiwn-apoteloun-tis-proipothesis-gia-sinesthimatiki-kai-oikonomiki-anaptixi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social relations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, interrupt conversations or games. They want their desire to be satisfied at all costs, they have little sense of patience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Impulsive behaviour:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Appear impatient, talk excessively without waiting for their turn, frequently interrupt the other person, seek attention with deviant and socially unacceptable behaviours (e.g. shouting or running in an unfamiliar space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Difficulties in lessons that require concentration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Such as reading, arithmetic or completing exercises. Their performance often varies strongly according to their preferences in certain subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Carelessness:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Easily distracted by external sounds or activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Symptoms in older children (13-18 years old)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>Memory problems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They forget homework or personal items such as books and notebooks. They show difficulty mainly in working memory, i.e. being able to cache and process the information necessary for a set.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inability to complete tasks:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They have difficulties in organising or meeting deadlines. They are characterised by procrastination or inconsistency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Risk and reckless decisions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They put themselves at risk without realising the consequences or penalties (e.g., interacting with strangers on social media. The questionnaire that focuses specifically on attention deficit and hyperactivity is the ADHD rating scale -IV of the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Du Paul, Power, Anastopoulos &amp; Reid. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also the questionnaires <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achenbach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are international in scope, concern teachers and parents and have to do with the overall image of a student in the classroom or at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For adults there are available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onmed.gr\/ygeia\/story\/354513\/depy-enilikon-to-test-ton-6-erotiseon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online self-assessment scales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are not scientifically accredited and should not be a source of diagnosis without an accurate psychiatric examination.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0397 <\/span><b>diagnosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children is easier because in adults the symptoms are less severe and many of them have learned to work with their disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children are often sensitised by teachers and worried by parents, so they go to specialists more often and thus receive a diagnosis, while many adults remain undiagnosed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in children the diagnosis is more necessary because it allows them to receive treatment and improve, while adults have found strategies and their own ways to be effective and functional.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very often in children, the diagnosis of ADHD is confused with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201clively child\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
